Hyundai’s new NEXO racks up nearly 7,000 sales in first three months

Hyundai has shifted almost 7,000 units of its all-new NEXO hydrogen fuel cell SUV in just three months, eclipsing the launch performance of its predecessor and signalling a revival of interest in fuel cell cars on home turf.
The facelifted model, unveiled in June, logged 6,767 sales between June and August, according to Hyundai figures reported by Yonhap – more than four times the 1,500 units sold by the first-generation NEXO in the same period back in 2018.
The car is a thorough overhaul of the NEXO model, featuring a 150 kW electric motor and a driving range of up to 720 km (448 miles) on a single tank, giving it the longest claimed range of any production hydrogen car.
Hyundai has been using the NEXO as a halo for its wider hydrogen ambitions. Last week, the company supplied 32 examples as protocol vehicles for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Energy Ministerial in Busan, putting the SUV in front of international policymakers.
A Hyundai official said that the strong reception “shows hydrogen mobility is gradually becoming part of everyday life,” adding that both the brisk early sales and its use at global events underline Hyundai’s confidence in fuel cell technology.
While still only available in South Korea, the NEXO’s strong start shows Hyundai’s long-term commitment to hydrogen passenger cars, even as much of the industry’s attention remains on battery electric vehicles.
