The 2025 Festival of Speed will play host to a broad sweep of Toyota Gazoo Racing’s greatest hits – and, more interestingly, a glimpse at where it’s going next.

The headline attraction, at least as far as we’re concerned, is the GR LH2 Racing Concept: a liquid hydrogen-fuelled endurance car that ditches batteries and embraces combustion.

Yes, really. Liquid hydrogen, burnt in an engine. Like petrol. Only colder.

GR LH2 Racing Concept

Fresh from its static unveiling at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours in June, the GR LH2 will make its UK debut in the paddocks at Goodwood.

It’s still a concept for now, but Toyota says it could form the basis of a future hydrogen-combustion entry in the World Endurance Championship.

Built on the GR010 Hybrid hypercar chassis, the car swaps the hybrid powertrain for a bespoke hydrogen engine and a pair of cryogenic tanks, storing liquid hydrogen at -253°C.

That brings higher energy density, faster refuelling, and a clear message that Toyota isn’t done with combustion just yet – even in a post-carbon motorsport world.

Hydrogen Hilux prototype returns

Toyota’s UK-built hydrogen Hilux will also return to the Festival, showing the brand’s fuel cell ambitions in a more rugged, production-minded form.

Developed at Burnaston with UK government funding, the prototype replaces diesel with the second-generation Mirai’s fuel cell system, offering over 365 miles of range and rapid refuelling. It’s not road-legal yet, but it’s already made a compelling case for off-road hydrogen use.

When is the Goodwood Festival of Speed

The world-renowned Festival of Speed returns to the historic grounds of Goodwood House from 10-13 July, celebrating all things car culture.
