California truck dealer installs first on-site hydrogen refuelling station in U.S
Tom’s Truck Center just broke new ground by becoming the first U.S. commercial truck dealership to install an onsite hydrogen refuelling station.
The longstanding truck dealer is situated in Santa Fe Springs conveniently situated along the major route Highway 5, offering a range of zero emissions trucks by Nikola, Greenpower and REE.
The modular 700 bar refuelling pumps, which are made by Nikola’s subsidiary brand HYLA, can top up 30 trucks daily – and are speedy enough to get them back on the road with minimal downtime.
Open from 6am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, this facility is designed to offer quick, efficient refuelling for heavy-duty trucks like the Nikola hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV).
President and CEO of Tom’s Truck Center, KC Heidler, put it simply: “By partnering with HYLA and making hydrogen refueling accessible, we’re significantly reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, and setting new standards in clean transportation.”
The unveiling wasn’t short on VIPs, with State Senators Josh Newman and Bob Archuleta there to underscore the importance of this move for California’s zero-emission ambitions.
Senator Newman said about the opening: “hydrogen and fuel technology offer a promising pathway toward replacing diesel with green, renewable sources of energy at scale and affordability,
Today’s opening of the HYLA station is an important milestone for zero-emission heavy goods movement in California and represents a critical next step as California makes progress on its ambitious goals to decarbonize our transportation systems in the service of cleaner air and a healthy sustainable environment for all.”
Tom’s Truck Center also have a permanent hydrogen refuelling station in the pipeline, set for completion by 2026.
Currently, there are other HYLA refuelling locations in Long Beach and Ontario, with 14 hydrogen refuelling solutions expected to be operational by the end of 2024.
