GLS delivers 100,000 packages by hydrogen powered Hyundai truck

Since late 2023, GLS Germany has delivered over 100,000 packages with the Hyundai Xcient Fuel Cell 6×2 truck in the greater Cologne area.

GLS Germany has successfully used its hydrogen fuel-cell powered Hyundai Xcient truck to deliver over 100,000 packages since late 2023.

The Hyundai Xcient has covered 30,000 kilometers, delivering parcels in the greater Cologne area and on routes between Cologne and Mannheim.

This hydrogen truck is powered by an 180 kW fuel cell system and can travel over 400km on a single tank in real world conditions.

Hydrogen fuel cell truck technology in action

The Hyundai Xcient truck is driven by a powerful 350 kW electric motor, fueled by two 90 kW hydrogen fuel cells in a ‘stack’, making 180kW of power.

This setup ensures strong performance, with an Allison transmission playing a key role in optimising the truck’s efficiency and range.

The truck can transport up to 1,300 parcels per trip, and its near-silent operation makes it ideal for urban deliveries, including night-time operations in populated areas.

Operational success

GLS Germany’s trial of the hydrogen-powered truck has proven successful, with no issues or breakdowns reported during the extensive testing period.

Oualid Hamza, Operations Manager at GLS, expressed satisfaction with the vehicle’s performance, noting its reliability and operational effectiveness.

The truck’s smooth handling and quiet operation have also been highlighted as major benefits.

A Hyundai Xcient hydrogen fuel cell truck has been part of the GLS Germany parcel service fleet since the end of 2023.

Allison Transmission

The truck is equipped with Allison Transmission’s fully automatic transmission, which is a device that enhances the torque and allows for the use of a smaller drive motor.
