German energy supplier Tyczka has officially broken ground on a new hydrogen refuelling site in Schweinfurt, Bavaria, marking the start of construction on what it says will become a full-scale regional hydrogen hub.

The €20 million project will eventually include a high-capacity hydrogen filling station and a dedicated electrolysis plant, producing green hydrogen directly on-site.

The station, located in Schweinfurt’s inland port, will offer both 350 and 700 bar refuelling for trucks and passenger vehicles and is designed to deliver up to 1,000kg of hydrogen per day. Tyczka says it will run 24/7 and is scheduled to enter operation by the end of 2025.

Electrolysis and logistics centre to follow

Alongside the filling station, Tyczka is already planning a 5MW electrolysis facility and truck filling centre, allowing green hydrogen to be produced and dispensed locally without the need for long-haul transport.

This, the company says, will form the core of a “comprehensive hydrogen hub with real regional added value.”

Thomas Zorn, Managing Director of Tyczka Hydrogen, said the firm was committed to establishing Schweinfurt as a central hydrogen location in Germany: “We are looking forward to the next stages – and to establishing Schweinfurt as an H2 hub in the middle of Germany together with our strong partners, especially Stadtwerke Schweinfurt GmbH.”

Strong political backing

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by State Secretary Tobias Gotthardt, Schweinfurt Mayor Sebastian Remelé and District Administrator Florian Töpper, who all voiced support for the project and its importance to the region’s energy infrastructure.

The Schweinfurt site adds to a growing number of regional hydrogen projects across Germany, many of which are receiving strong backing from local utilities and state governments.

Tyczka’s latest development highlights a clear focus on truck-ready refuelling and decentralised hydrogen production – both seen as key pillars of Germany’s hydrogen mobility strategy.
