Nikola records sales of 88 hydrogen trucks in Q3 2024, totals 200 for the year
Nikola Corporation (Nasdaq: NKLA) has just announced another milestone in its journey with 88 hydrogen-powered Class 8 trucks sold in North America during the third quarter of 2024, bringing the total sales for the year to 200 hydrogen fuel cell trucks.
The Q3 sales fall within Nikola’s truck sales guidance of 80 to 100 units for the quarter, reinforcing the company’s strong momentum in the hydrogen fuel cell truck (FCEV) market.
Since the launch of its hydrogen fuel cell truck line in Q4 last year, Nikola has sold 235 hydrogen-powered trucks in total, demonstrating consistent demand for zero-emission freight solutions, outside of battery electric.
Nikola CEO Steve Girsky emphasised the importance of the Q3 results, stating:
“This is a record sales quarter for Nikola, with 88 hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks wholesaled to our dealers for end customers, as well as the addition of a first-ever U.S. dealer-based HYLA modular refueling station.
Despite overall market headwinds, Nikola remains focused on our mission to pioneer solutions for a zero-emission world, and we’re doing it one truck at a time.”
While the sales of Class 8 hydrogen-powered trucks have been central to Nikola’s success, the company is also accelerating the development of its hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.
Under its HYLA energy brand, Nikola introduced a modular hydrogen refuelling station in the U.S. this quarter – the first of its kind to be based at a dealer location.
This station is a critical piece of Nikola’s broader strategy to build a comprehensive hydrogen refuelling ecosystem, covering everything from supply to distribution and dispensing.
The HYLA brand continues to support the expansion of Nikola’s hydrogen-powered truck sales by ensuring that refuelling stations are available to customers as their fleets scale up.
The modular design of HYLA stations allows for flexibility and scalability, making it easier for fleets to transition to hydrogen without having to wait for full-scale refuelling infrastructure to be deployed.
Nikola’s sales figures come amid a broader push to decarbonise heavy-duty transport in North America.
The company’s Class 8 trucks, including both battery-electric (BEV) and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV), are designed to meet the increasing demand for zero-emission freight solutions.
As regulatory pressures and corporate sustainability goals align, fleets are looking for practical, scalable solutions to reduce emissions in their over-the-road operations.
As Nikola rounds out 2024, the company’s focus on scaling hydrogen-powered truck sales and building out the hydrogen refuelling ecosystem through HYLA positions it as a leader in the transition to zero-emission transport.
The sales figures from Q3 clearly highlight both the progress made and the road ahead for hydrogen mobility in the heavy-duty trucking sector.
