ULEMCo has secured the first commercial order for its HyTANKa mobile hydrogen refuelling unit, less than four months after its launch.

The Liverpool-based hydrogen technology firm announced that T&M Bowser Solutions – a specialist in on-site fuelling and tanker services – has purchased the first HyTANKa system.

The ADR-approved unit can deliver hydrogen to machinery and vehicles directly on-site at up to 350 bar, offering a portable refuelling solution for hard-to-decarbonise sectors such as construction.

Making hydrogen refuelling as straightforward as diesel

Developed under the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s ‘Element 1’ Red Diesel Replacement project, HyTANKa was unveiled in June as an autonomous mobile hydrogen bowser designed to make hydrogen fuelling as straightforward as diesel.

It can be driven on public roads to hydrogen filling facilities and then deployed to remote worksites.

Amanda Lyne, Managing Director of ULEMCo, said the collaboration shows how traditional fuel providers can help customers transition to cleaner fuels.

“Development of the HyTANKa demonstrates how traditional fuel service providers can help their customers adapt and switch to clean energy solutions,” Lyne said. “This collaboration demonstrates a clear commitment from both our companies to driving decarbonisation and developing the market for clean fuel.”

T&M Bowser Solutions Director Lewis Dicker said the company’s experience in mobile refuelling will help bring hydrogen to customers who are used to conventional fuel logistics.

“We are excited to be leveraging our position as the UK’s most trusted provider of diesel bowser services to accelerate the transition to decarbonisation within the construction sector,” Dicker said. “HyTANKa enables a significant reduction in CO₂ and emissions from construction equipment, supporting wider air quality improvements and net zero goals.”

Both firms believe the first HyTANKa deployment will act as a catalyst for wider hydrogen adoption across heavy-duty and off-highway applications – sectors where battery electrification remains challenging.
