ULEMCo has unveiled a new hydrogen-powered refuelling truck designed to support off-road equipment in construction and other industrial settings.

The HyTANKa® is a mobile, road-legal hydrogen bowser intended to serve sites without fixed infrastructure – operating in much the same way diesel bowsers do today.

It’s already been trialled in the field, including on-site refuelling of 20-tonne dual-fuel excavators as part of the DESNZ-backed Element 1 project.

Built for real site conditions

Construction is widely seen as one of the hardest sectors to decarbonise – not just because of the machines involved, but because of the logistical demands of keeping them fuelled in remote or early-phase environments.

HyTANKa is ULEMCo’s attempt to address that. The vehicle features an onboard two-way booster system that allows it to refuel hydrogen machines at up to 350 bar, and to refill its own tanks from lower-pressure sources such as manifolded cylinders or site-based storage.

According to the company, the system can operate without a fixed power supply, grid connection or external compressor.

Mobile, self-contained, and certified for road use

HyTANKa is ADR-certified and powered by a hydrogen dual-fuel engine, allowing it to travel between hydrogen supply points and dispersed machinery on-site.

It’s designed to offer the same kind of flexibility site operators are used to with diesel – serving multiple machines per day and adapting to changing site layouts as needed.

ULEMCo says field trials have confirmed the platform’s suitability for regular use, with fast refuelling and minimal site disruption.

First showing at HEA 2025

The HyTANKa will be shown publicly for the first time at the Hydrogen Energy Association 2025 Annual Conference at the QEII Centre in Westminster on 5 June.

“HyTANKa provides the missing link between hydrogen production and point-of-use on active construction sites,” said Amanda Lyne, Managing Director of ULEMCo.

“It brings the kind of operational flexibility diesel has traditionally offered, but with a dramatic reduction in carbon emissions.”

ULEMCo is targeting construction and other off-grid sectors where hydrogen machinery is starting to arrive – but the fuelling infrastructure still isn’t.
