Migros Eastern Switzerland has added two more hydrogen-powered trucks to its delivery fleet, putting a pair of IVECO S-eWay Fuel Cell articulated lorries into daily operation.

The trucks join two existing hydrogen trucks first introduced in 2020 and will support supermarket deliveries across the region – from Graubünden to Schaffhausen.

The new trucks form part of a four-vehicle pre-series test programme in Switzerland, developed by IVECO with fuel cell technology supplied by FPT Industrial in Arbon.

Over the next two years, the trucks will be trialled in real-world supermarket delivery conditions to assess performance, uptime, and operating efficiency.

“With the IVECO S-eWay Fuel Cell, we are testing a key technology for the emission-free heavy-duty transport of tomorrow in Switzerland,” said Domenico Nastasi, Managing Director of IVECO (Switzerland) AG.

Each truck uses a hydrogen fuel cell system to convert hydrogen into electricity, powering an electric motor with a driving range of over 400km.

Migros says the vehicles are quiet, quick to refuel, and perfectly suited to intensive daily logistics work – provided the hydrogen is both green and accessible.

Fuel from the region, for the region

The trucks refuel just down the road from Migros’ operations centre in Gossau, at an AVIA hydrogen filling station operated by the Osterwalder Group.

The station is supplied by locally produced green hydrogen from the Kubel power plant in St. Gallen – one of only two hydropower-based hydrogen production sites in Switzerland.

“We are delighted that we can travel emission-free using local fuel,” said Daniel Balmer, Head of Transport Logistics at Migros Eastern Switzerland. “Fuel from the region, for the region – that is sustainability in action.”

The hydrogen is produced by the St. Gallen-Appenzell Power Plants (SAK), together with Osterwalder and SN Erneuerbare Energie AG, and is specifically targeted at decarbonising Swiss heavy-duty transport.

Migros Eastern Switzerland already uses a mix of alternative fuels – including biodiesel, biogas and now green hydrogen – across its logistics operations, which supply 120 supermarkets throughout the region with fresh products daily.

The deployment is another example of Switzerland’s decentralised but locally grounded approach to hydrogen mobility, where low-emission freight is supported by small-scale, renewably powered refuelling infrastructure.
