HyHAUL Mobility has confirmed a Final Investment Decision (FID) on its £14 million hydrogen truck corridor project, with three dedicated refuelling stations now set for delivery along the M4 by summer 2026.

The investment, delivered through HyHAUL’s partner Protium Green Solutions, will fund sites along the key freight route between London and South Wales.

All three stations will serve hydrogen-powered HGVs as part of the UK’s Zero Emission HGV & Infrastructure Demonstrator programme (ZEHID), run by the Department for Transport and managed by Innovate UK.

Described by the consortium as “the UK’s first hydrogen HGV refuelling corridor,” the HyHAUL project is backed by an industry team including Scania, Novuna Vehicle Solutions, Reynolds Logistics, and hydrogen supplier Protium.

Fuel Cell Systems Ltd will supply refuelling equipment for the stations, which will use green hydrogen produced at Protium facilities in Wales.

The three sites are expected to become operational by mid-2026, enabling early adopters of hydrogen trucks to operate back-to-base and trunking routes without relying on diesel fallback.

‘Concrete steps’ after four years in planning

The Final Investment Decision marks the culmination of nearly four years of development work on the HyHAUL concept. Christopher Jackson, Chairman of HyHAUL and CEO of Protium, said:

“Nearly four years since the project was first conceptualised, it is incredibly exciting to see the UK take its first concrete steps towards commercialising hydrogen heavy duty transport applications at scale.

“HyHAUL will be the pioneer that unlocks part of the UK’s decarbonisation journey, and we are incredibly excited to be leading the charge together with our incredible partners.”

Once operational, HyHAUL will be the largest dedicated hydrogen HGV infrastructure deployment in the country – and a test case for wider roll-out.

The project provides end-to-end hydrogen mobility capability: from green hydrogen production and logistics (Protium, Reynolds), to vehicle leasing (Novuna), vehicle supply (Scania), and station operation (HyHAUL, Fuel Cell Systems).
