UK hydrogen fuel retailer Element 2 has signed a letter of intent with Hydrogen Refuelling Solutions (HRS) for a mobile hydrogen refuelling station in Glasgow – its second planned deployment using French-made equipment.

The modular unit will be based on the manufacturer’s “HRS14” platform, offering 14kg/hour of hydrogen dispensing capacity and the ability to be dismantled and redeployed in around 10 days.

If finalised, it would be the fourth HRS-built station in the UK and the second for Element 2, following a 2024 order for a unit at Teesside Airport.

Element 2, established in 2020, is aiming to roll out what it calls ‘50 in 5’ – meaning 50 hydrogen stations over five years across the UK and Ireland, focused on commercial fleets, light-duty vehicles and early private uptake.

Asset light model

It operates an “asset-light” model centred on infrastructure deployment and logistics rather than hydrogen production, working with a range of equipment providers, aiming to reduce the CapEx that would otherwise be required in building out a nationwide infrastructure.

HRS, a Grenoble-based manufacturer of hydrogen refuelling stations, described the potential Glasgow order as a vote of confidence in its modular and agile systems, particularly for markets in early rollout phases.

The firm claims the mobile station design is well-suited to accelerating adoption ahead of larger fixed refuelling hubs, and highlighted Scotland’s strong hydrogen policy framework as a driver.

“Following the order of our first station in Teesside, we are proud to once again support Element 2 in the rollout of hydrogen mobility in the UK,” said HRS CEO Hassen Rachedi. “Hydrogen mobility can only succeed through strong partnerships, proven technology, and a shared vision of decarbonising transportation.”

Element 2’s CEO, Dr Andrew Hagan, added that the Glasgow deployment would be the company’s first proper foray into Scotland and the wider Celtic regions, calling it “an exciting opportunity” to grow the UK network and continue working with HRS across Europe.

HRS says it has deployed 29 high-capacity stations to date, with a cumulative installed capacity of more than 6 tonnes per day.

All units are bi-pressure with 350-bar, 350HF and 700-bar refuelling nozzles, designed to accommodate everything from hydrogen trucks and buses to cars.

Hydrogen mobility in Scotland

Scotland was the first country to declare a climate emergency and is targeting net zero emissions by 2045.

Hydrogen is expected to play a significant role, with government support focusing on domestic production, offshore wind integration, and local use in transport, ports and industry.

Element 2 previously supplied hydrogen refuelling in Glasgow during the COP26 climate summit in 2021, including refuelling for hydrogen-powered buses.
