Air Liquide will supply up to 1,000 tonnes of certified renewable hydrogen per year to H2 MOBILITY refuelling stations in Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr region under a new long-term agreement between the two companies.

The deal covers both existing and upcoming hydrogen refuelling sites for heavy-duty vehicles, with the first stations set to begin dispensing certified RFNBO* hydrogen this summer.

The fuel will be produced at Air Liquide’s 20 MW ‘Trailblazer’ electrolyser in Oberhausen – the first in Germany to be certified under the EU’s ISCC EU scheme.

H2 MOBILITY has set an ambitious goal of running its entire refuelling network on renewable hydrogen by 2028.

Germany’s largest RFNBO producer

Commissioned earlier this year, Air Liquide’s Oberhausen plant is currently the largest RFNBO-certified (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) hydrogen production site in Germany.

It can produce up to 2,900 tonnes of green hydrogen annually and is already connected to Air Liquide’s existing pipeline infrastructure in the Ruhr region, allowing direct supply to major industrial users in steel, chemicals, and refining – as well as transport.

“This commitment shows Air Liquide’s ability to manage the entire supply chain – from the production of certified renewable hydrogen to the supply of the refuelling station – cost-effectively and reliably,” said Oliver Meier, Director Hydrogen Energy Central Europe at Air Liquide.

H2 MOBILITY, which operates Europe’s largest network of public hydrogen stations, said the deal would accelerate its transition to fully renewable hydrogen in one of Germany’s most industrialised regions.

“The contract with Air Liquide brings us a significant step closer to this ambitious goal in the Rhine-Ruhr region,” said COO Frank Fronzke.

1,000 tonnes for heavy-duty mobility

While the 1,000-tonne volume represents just over a third of Trailblazer’s annual capacity, it’s a meaningful chunk aimed squarely at transport use.

According to Fronzke, the renewable hydrogen from this deal will begin powering trucks and buses at H2 MOBILITY’s Rhine-Ruhr stations within months.

The region, home to major logistics hubs and industrial corridors, is seen as one of Germany’s key early adopters for hydrogen mobility – especially in the commercial vehicle segment, where battery-electric range and payload limitations remain a hurdle.

Founding partners, long-term collaboration

Air Liquide is one of the original shareholders of H2 MOBILITY, which began in 2015 as a joint venture to kickstart Germany’s hydrogen infrastructure.

Since 2022, the company has shifted from pilot-phase deployment to commercial operation and services, while expanding its offering to include construction, calibration, and station operation support.

The new supply agreement reinforces the partnership between the two firms and points to a more mature, commercial phase of hydrogen deployment in Germany – one where certified renewable production is starting to line up with real-world mobility demand.
