Plug Power to supply 55 MW of electrolysers for UK hydrogen hubs

Plug Power has locked in a major UK contract, teaming up with Carlton Power to deliver 55 MW of PEM electrolyser capacity across three green hydrogen sites — and it’s all part of the government’s push to get clean hydrogen flowing into the grid.
Hydrogen hubs from Cumbria to Devon
The US-based hydrogen tech firm has been selected by Carlton Power to supply 55 MW of PEM electrolyser capacity across three green hydrogen hubs. The sites are located in Trafford (Greater Manchester), Barrow-in-Furness (Cumbria), and Langage (Devon), and will use Plug’s GenSure high-output electrolyser systems to produce up to 22 tonnes of green hydrogen per day.
The green hydrogen will support local industry and transport, helping to decarbonise major regions of the UK while boosting energy security.
“This agreement marks another key milestone for Plug in the UK and European markets,” said Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug Power. “It also helps Carlton Power realise its vision to deploy hydrogen projects in key industrial hubs across the UK.”
Carlton Power expects deliveries to begin between 2025 and 2026, subject to final government approvals.
Government backing secured
All three projects are currently seeking funding through the UK’s Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 (HAR1), part of the country’s plan to scale up low-carbon hydrogen production.
If successful, the projects will become major contributors to the UK’s hydrogen economy, supporting jobs and sustainable growth across three strategic locations.
Eric Adams, Managing Director of Carlton Power, said: “Our agreement with Plug Power is a major step forward. Plug’s global experience and proven PEM technology give us confidence as we move toward construction.”
A step closer to national infrastructure
Together, the projects represent one of the largest combined electrolyser deployments in the UK to date. They could serve as a foundation for a broader national hydrogen network and help the country hit its climate and energy targets.
The deal also strengthens Plug Power’s growing presence in Europe. The company continues to scale up deployment of its proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser systems, aiming to be a leader in green hydrogen production on both sides of the Atlantic.
