Element 2 has placed an order with French manufacturer HRS (Hydrogen Refuelling Solutions) for a first-of-its-kind mobile hydrogen refuelling station, to be deployed in Glasgow.

The HRS14 unit can deliver 14 kg of hydrogen per hour and supports both 350-bar and 700-bar dispensing – enough for HGVs, buses and passenger cars. It can be installed and made operational in just ten days, and relocated as demand shifts.

Element 2 said the station is designed to maximise utilisation in the early stages of rollout and avoid the risk of expensive underused infrastructure. This flexibility is central to its “50 in 5” programme, which aims to deliver 50 UK hydrogen stations in five years.

Glasgow to host Scotland’s first dedicated HGV site

The project will create Scotland’s first dedicated hydrogen HGV refuelling site, in partnership with Russell Logistics. With a fleet of more than 250 vehicles, Russell said integrating hydrogen could save over 25,000 tonnes of CO₂e per year across its road and rail operations.

Graham Russell, CEO of John G Russell Transport, said the Glasgow deployment is a “natural next step” in its low-carbon logistics plans and could be located at its Coatbridge rail hub.

A modular approach to hydrogen

Dr Andrew Hagan, Chief Development Officer at Element 2, called the station a “breakthrough in flexible, cost-effective infrastructure,” adding that it allows the company to trial and expand capacity as demand grows, then redeploy the asset to new locations.

HRS founder Hassen Rachedi said the deal “perfectly illustrates our mission: delivering flexible, high-performance and practical solutions to democratise access to hydrogen and reduce the carbon footprint of transport.”

This is the second HRS station ordered by Element 2, following the Teesside Airport installation in 2024, and the fourth HRS-made station deployed in the UK overall.

Scotland’s hydrogen momentum

Scotland, the first country in the world to declare a climate emergency, is targeting net zero by 2045 and has made hydrogen a pillar of its energy transition strategy.

Element 2 previously supplied stations for buses during COP26 in Glasgow, and said this deployment marks the start of a broader Scottish network.
