Ever wondered what the future of waste collection looks like? Well, wonder no more – Hyzon and New Way have just unveiled North America’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered refuse truck.

Hydrogen fuel cells are gaining traction as the go-to technology for heavy-duty applications, and refuse collection is no exception.

Unlike battery-electric vehicles, which struggle with weight and range, hydrogen-powered lorries offer a perfect balance of power, efficiency, and sustainability.

Zero emissions

With a range of 125 miles and the ability to handle 1,200 cart lifts, this new refuse truck is designed to meet the rigorous demands of waste collection, all while producing zero emissions.

The truck made its debut at Waste Expo in Las Vegas, drawing significant attention from industry insiders.

Hyzon, known for its high-performance hydrogen fuel cell systems, has partnered with New Way, a leader in refuse collection technology.

Together, they’ve created a vehicle that not only matches the performance of traditional diesel trucks but exceeds it in terms of sustainability.

Eric Evans, Chief Product Officer for New Way, summed it up perfectly, saying: “Refuse collection presents an ideal application to showcase the viability of hydrogen fuel cell technology across the environmental services industry.”

California and Canada trials

It’s already hitting the streets – the hydrogen-powered refuse vehicle is currently being tested on routes in the San Francisco Bay Area, with further trials planned across California and Canada.

These trials aim to demonstrate that hydrogen is not just a viable alternative but a superior one for heavy-duty waste collection.

Keep an eye out for this hydrogen-powered marvel in a city near you.

As Hyzon and New Way continue their trials, the potential for wider adoption grows.

Could this be the future of waste collection? We certainly think so.
