In a significant move towards a greener future, the Labour Party – led by Sir Keir Starmer – has announced a substantial £500m ($638m) investment in the green hydrogen sector.

This commitment is part of their broader strategy to transition the UK to renewable energy and achieve energy independence.

Key Aspects of Labour’s Hydrogen Strategy:

1. Major investment in green hydrogen:

Labour’s manifesto pledges £500m to bolster the development of green hydrogen in the UK.

This funding aims to support companies like ITM Power and drive innovation and growth within the hydrogen sector.

2. Support for hydrogen infrastructure:

The Labour Party plans to invest in the infrastructure needed for hydrogen production, storage, and distribution.

This includes developing hydrogen industrial clusters and upgrading ports to facilitate hydrogen transport.

3. National Wealth Fund for energy:

A National Wealth Fund will be established to directly invest in hydrogen projects across the country.

This initiative is designed to stimulate economic growth and reinforce the UK’s position as a leader in hydrogen technology.

4. Long-term energy storage solutions:

In addition to hydrogen, Labour will invest in carbon capture and storage and marine energy to ensure the UK has the long-term energy storage solutions necessary to meet future demands.

Vision for a hydrogen-powered future:

Labour’s strategy includes the creation of a publicly-owned energy firm, Great British Energy (GBE), which aims to leverage the UK’s offshore infrastructure and the skills of its workforce to advance hydrogen production and use.

The Energy Independence Bill will establish the framework for these policies, ensuring a coordinated approach to energy and climate goals.

Sir Keir Starmer emphasised the importance of this transition during his speech in Greater Manchester, highlighting that “clean power is the best opportunity we’ve had in a generation”.

This bold plan underscores Labour’s commitment to tackling climate change and securing a sustainable energy future.

By focusing on green hydrogen, the Labour Party is poised to make the UK a global leader in renewable energy.

Clare Jackson, CEO of Hydrogen UK, emphasised the need for a clear timeline and specific objectives, saying: “A new Government presents an opportunity for policymakers to solidify commitments and accelerate the deployment of hydrogen technology, ensuring the UK remains competitive in the global race.”
